Last year at Thanksgiving, we said our last good byes to Dad. Sadly, we had started saying good bye to him many years before this, as with every visit, we watched his ability to be fully present slip away. He was a big man with an even bigger heart. He worked hard, he played hard, he loved to laugh, and he cherished his family. Each of these things were taken from him as Alzheimers progressed.
As his children, we did what we could to help in his care, but ultimately, it was Mom who carried the heaviest load. She did so as long as she could but was eventually unable to look after Dad, at which time he moved to a long term care facility.
My goal in raising funds for the Alzheimer Society is to help provide vital services and programs for both the caregivers and for people living with dementia.
