Why is the Walk & Run being turned into a Virtual Challenge this year?

For the safety of our participants, we made the decision to convert the walk & run to a virtual event this year. Since the beginning of the pandemic the Alzheimer Calgary team has been keeping an eye on the situation and working behind the scenes to develop contingency plans. In May, without clear guidance on whether large public events would be allowed in the fall, we decided to make the decision to go virtual, in the interest of moving forward with planning the event and ensuring we could provide a top-quality experience for everyone involved.

Although this year we won’t be walking and running together along the Bow River Pathways as usual, we’re confident that we’ll still be able to have an exceptional experience.

Our goal with this event remains the same: to raise funds and awareness to support local families impacted by dementia.

 

What will the Virtual event be like?

Like every other year on Thanksgiving Sunday, we’ll be walking and running to raise funds and awareness for local families impacted by dementia. The main difference in 2021 is that we won’t be walking and running together!

Our team is working on a number of fun ideas to keep you engaged and entertained in the lead up to the event. We will have fun challenges, exciting prizes and much more. Stay tuned for more details.

 

How can I take part in a virtual event?

  1. Register to take part
  2. On event day, you can walk or run at a location of your choosing. Or, you can choose a completely different activity! The sky’s the limit! You could bike, swim, plank, or any activity you can think of!

  3. Gather your team!
  4. Once registered, we will provide you and your team with ideas, inspiration and support to help you get involved and fundraise.

  5. Set a fundraising goal
  6. Ask friends, family members or co-workers. Head to your Participant Centre to see all the quick and easy ways you can start fundraising now. This can help increase your fundraising efforts quickly and easily! And check out our “Tips & tools page” to give you that extra boost of ideas for an even bigger impact.

  7. Volunteer
  8. We still need volunteers this year to pull off a successful event. Check out the volunteer positions.

  9. Spread the word
  10. Every effort helps build awareness and support for the cause! Use the hashtag #YYCALZ on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.

 

Since there is no physical event this year, do I still need to fundraise?

This year, the need for fundraising is greater than ever. Caregivers and people living with dementia are at greatest risk of COVID-19 because of their average age and have been deeply affected by the loss of vital support programs and services during the pandemic. The Alzheimer Calgary Support Team has seen an increase in complex cases, as families cope with the ongoing effects of isolation and the loss of formal and informal supports.

Our team will be providing as much support as we can to help you and your team with fundraising, and we encourage you to share your story with other participants to inspire them to fundraise for this important cause.

 

So many of my friends and family are experiencing financial uncertainty. How can I be expected to ask for their support this year?

We certainly understand this dilemma. There is no easy answer, but we would emphasize that if every participant raised $250, we’d be well on our way to meeting our goals!

Raising $250 could mean asking 10 people to donate $25; or asking 5 people for $50; it might mean asking your employer if they provide a corporate matching program; it could mean sacrificing your daily cup of coffee for a few months. I forgot my Username and Password. How can I find out what they are?

Remember that your username and password are case sensitive. Click here to reset your password. You will then receive an email containing your username and password.

 

I have already signed up for the event, but now I’d like to join a team. How?

  1. Login into the www.igalzheimerwalkrun.ca site and go to my Participant Centre
  2. Click on the Tools tab
  3. Click on Edit Profile
  4. Navigate to the Event Information section
  5. To join a team, complete one of the following:* Select the existing team name in the drop-down box OR* Click “I want to start my own team  and become a Team Captain
  6. Click “Update”

 

How do people make a donation to my fundraising page?

Go to www.igalzheimerwalkrun.ca and click on the “Donate” button. They can then search for your name or your team name. OR share your Personal page URL and have them come directly to that page.

 

How can I see who has donated to me?

Sign in on the website (on the home page, top right corner). Type in the username and password that you received when you registered. You can then view your donor list and the amounts that have been donated.

 

Some of my donors are not showing up on the scroll mechanism. Why?

As your donors make a contribution, they have the option of whether or not they want to appear in the recognition scroll. Some donors may have chosen to remain anonymous.

 

How am I creating change for local families?

Your fundraising efforts go directly to supporting local families. Funds are applied to local programs and services that serve thousands of people affected by dementia in Calgary and surrounding areas. You're helping provide high-quality care, much-needed education, and access to support along the journey.

 

How do I register for the 2021 IG Wealth Management Alzheimer Walk and Run VIRTUAL CHALLENGE online?

Head to our Home page and select one of the pink buttons to "Register as an individual” or "Start or join a team". You will be guided through the registration process. Once your transaction is complete, you will receive a confirmation email receipt.

 

I’d like to volunteer, but I’d also like to participate as a walker/runner. How?

There are a number of people who help out with event preparations leading up to the event, and then participate in the event. If you’d like to volunteer AND participate, you must first register online for the event as a participant before you can sign up to be a volunteer.

 

I’m not comfortable with using the online system. Can I continue to register and raise pledges/donations the “old way”?

Yes. If you are not comfortable using this platform, you may register for the event by calling us at 403-290-0110 or emailing walkrun@alzheimercalgary.ca. Pledge forms can be emailed to you, faxed or picked up at the office on request. They can also be downloaded and printed under the participants section of the web page.

 

How can I stop emails from dropping into my junk folder?

Go into your junk folder and highlight the specific message you want to mark as “not junk.” Right-click on it and select the “junk” option and a secondary drop-down menu will appear. You can select “not junk” and the email should be put into your inbox immediately. You can also select “never block sender” or “never block sender’s domain.”

 

I’ve sent emails to my contacts, but for some reason, they aren’t receiving them. Why?

The Alzheimer Society of Calgary has done extensive testing to ensure that email will be sent and received with ease using most email platforms. That being said, we cannot control for extra-sensitive settings on some spam filter software. In most cases, this applies to corporate email accounts that may be set to a higher degree of safeguarding. If you encounter this difficulty, please ask your contact to check their “junk” folder. They can prevent future email from filtering into junk by marking the message as “not junk” and by adding the email address to their safe list. In some cases, additional information about this can be determined by asking them to get in touch with their I.T. department.

 

Why is the "Support a person or team" search not finding a participant that I know has registered?

You must type in the first name or last name of the participant with the exact spelling used when the person registered. You may wish to try different variations of spelling or double check your spelling. These fields are not case sensitive.

 

I received a website address in my confirmation email. What is it for?

This website address will take you to your personal web page. It also gives you access to your own Participant Centre for fundraising and communicating your passion for the cause. You can also copy and paste that link into any other form of an email.

 

Is my information secure?

Yes. We have made every effort to protect your information. We use industry-standard SSL encryption techniques to make sure that your credit card information, passwords and personal information travel securely over the Internet. Our provider has also installed an encryption engine on our database server so that your data is securely stored.

 

By using this online platform, will my name be added to various mailing lists?

The Alzheimer Society of Calgary abides by all privacy legislation in Canada. We do not share or sell contact information with any third parties – only if you have expressly permitted us to do so, or if we are required to do so by law. We collect and maintain only the personal information that is voluntarily submitted to us. If, at any time, you wish to stop receiving communication from us, or wish to receive communication strictly related to certain topics, please contact us at 403.290.0110 or e-mail walkrun@alzheimercalgary.ca.
